Virat Kohli has said goodbye to the captaincy of Test cricket by posting on social media. He posted on Instagram saying

“It’s been 7 years of hard work toil
and relentless is perseverance  every day
to take the team in the right direction. I have done the job with absolute honesty
and left nothing out there.

Everything has to come to a holt at
some stage and for me as captain of India. It’s now there have been many ups
and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of
effort or lack of believe. I have always believe in giving my 120 percent in
everything I do and I can’t do that I know it’s not the right thing to do. I
have absolute clarity in my heart and I have cannot be dishonest to my team.

I want to thank the BCCI for giving
me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more
importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision I have for the team
from day one and never give up in any situations. You guys have made this
journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi Bhai and the support group where
the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in test cricket
consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to
life. Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and
found me to be able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”

Virat Kohli is the most successful captain of Indian Test cricket.  his record as Test captain:

Matches – 68
Won – 40
Lost – 17
Draw – 11

A lot has happened with Virat Kohli in the last few months. The captaincy of the first T20 was given up by Virat Kohli himself and then was dropped from the one-day format. Virat has not even scored a century in Test cricket for the last 2 years and his average is only 25. The average batting performance can also be a reason for this. Indian cricket will miss a captain like Virat. Now it will be seen whether the captaincy goes to Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul or Jasprit Bumrah or any new decision is taken by BCCI.
