Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Hardik Pandya have been included in India’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The three players last played ODIs in the 2023 World Cup. The 15-member squad, announced on January 18, will be led by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill as the vice-captain. A notable addition to the team is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is yet to play his first ODI.
India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
*Note: Harshit Rana will replace Bumrah in the three ODIs against England.
Bumrah’s inclusion depends on his recovery from back spasms, which he suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He will miss the England series, where Harshit Rana will take his place. If fit, Bumrah will lead the fast-bowling unit in the Champions Trophy, joined by Shami, who was the top wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup but has been out due to surgery, and Arshdeep Singh. Mohammed Siraj has not been picked.
Hardik Pandya returns after recovering from an ankle injury that kept him out of the World Cup’s later stages. Ravindra Jadeja, who last played ODIs 14 months ago, is also back. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who were part of the recent Sri Lanka series, are the other all-rounders.
Kuldeep Yadav has also made a comeback after recovering from hernia surgery. The spinner was sidelined after playing one Test in the New Zealand series.
In the top order, Gill, who averages 58.20 in ODIs, faces competition for his opening spot as the team has also picked Yashasvi Jaiswal, a left-hander who has yet to debut in ODIs but has been in great form in domestic cricket, averaging 54 with a highest score of 203.
KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are the wicketkeeping options. Rahul impressed in the 2023 World Cup, and Pant brings a left-handed batting option.
India is in Group A with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. They will play their first match against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. Before the tournament, India will play three ODIs against England in Nagpur (February 6), Cuttack (February 9), and Ahmedabad (February 12).
