Steve Smith said goodbye to ODI cricket

Australia’s temporary captain, Steve Smith, told his teammates after the 2025 Champions Trophy semifinal against India in Dubai that he would retire from ODI cricket right away.

Smith made this announcement after being the top scorer in Australia’s loss to India in the semifinal on Tuesday. According to Cricket Australia, Smith will still play Test and T20 matches but will no longer play ODIs.

Smith started his ODI career in 2010 against the West Indies as a leg-spinner and all-rounder. He played 170 ODIs, scoring 5,800 runs with an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also took 28 wickets.

Smith was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023. He became ODI captain in 2015 and led the team one last time in the semifinal as a stand-in captain for Pat Cummins.

Among his achievements, Smith was named Australia’s ODI Player of the Year in 2015 and 2021 and was included in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year in 2015.
